DETROIT -- With the rain forecast to last throughout the day, Saturday's Yankees-Tigers game at Comerica Park was postponed.
A makeup date has been scheduled for Sunday at 7:10 p.m. ET as part of a day-night split doubleheader in Detroit, the Tigers announced. The first game will start at 1:10 p.m.
"Actually, with some of the bad weather we've had, we've been pretty fortunate that we've been able to get most of them in," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "I know other teams have a lot of makeups to do now, so that makes it a challenge."
Saturday's game was officially postponed at 11 a.m., roughly two hours before first pitch. It's the second game postponed this year for the Yankees, and the fourth for the Tigers.
There was a 100 percent chance of rain expected around first pitch Saturday and a game-time temperature of 38 degrees, with a wind chill around 25 degrees.
Right-hander Luis Cessa was scheduled to make a spot start, filling the spot vacated by Carsten Sabathia, who has been out since April 7 due to a right hip issue. He will start the second game of the split doubleheader, and right-hander Luis Severino, who was slated to start Sunday's finale, will start the 1:10 p.m. game as initially scheduled.
The Tigers, meanwhile, will stick with their same starters: Francisco Liriano will start the 1:10 p.m. game, and left-hander Matthew Boyd will take the mound for Game 2.
Weather conditions for Sunday's split doubleheader aren't promising, with heavy rains once again expected to fall throughout much of the day.
"It doesn't look very good [for Sunday], but we'll just try and have a good day of rest today," said Boone. "We'll prepare ourselves like we are going tomorrow, and we'll see what Mother Nature has for us."
In the event both games are postponed Sunday, Boone said Severino would be pushed back to Monday's series opener against the Marlins, and Sabathia, who is on the 10-day disabled list, will start Tuesday, with Masahiro Tanaka being pushed back to Thursday.
Sabathia, who was forced to exit his previous start last Friday due to a hip flexor strain, threw a 57-pitch bullpen session Thursday and didn't experience any discomfort. He was scheduled to throw another bullpen Saturday, and barring a setback, he'll rejoin the Yankees on Tuesday.
If a makeup date is necessary, there are several mutual off-days for the two clubs that could work, including June 4, Aug. 20 and Sept. 13.
"If the weather is awful [Sunday], it's awful, and you could have a situation like today," Boone said. "I think if it's like this, and it's raining all day, and that's the forecast, I'd like to think that it'll be called intelligently ahead of time. But we'll see."
