Pham back in lineup after being hit by pitch

June 9th, 2019

BOSTON -- Tommy Pham returned to the Rays’ starting lineup on Sunday after exiting Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader at Fenway Park with a right wrist contusion. The left fielder batted in the No. 2 spot.

X-rays were negative after Pham was hit by a 90.1 mph two-seam fastball from Red Sox starter Josh A. Smith in the second inning Saturday. While Pham did not play, he was available to hit in the second game of the doubleheader.

“He was pretty adamant that he felt good,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “It’s a little tight, which we would expect.”

The Rays were able to breathe a sigh of relief that Pham would not miss more time after previously being sidelined by a right calf injury. Pham was only in his third game back when he was hit by the pitch.

His availability provided a boost to the Rays’ lineup against Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez. Pham entered Sunday’s series finale batting .375 (3-for-8) against the lefty.

“Tommy wants to be out there,” Cash said. “Definitely with Rodriguez on the mound for them today, kind of load up the righties and glad to have him back.”

Alvarado update

Francisco Alvarado was moved from the family medical emergency list, which maxed out at seven days, to the restricted list. Cash said there is a chance Alvarado could rejoin the team on Monday or Tuesday when the Rays host the Athletics.

Poche provides bullpen flexibility

The day after Colin Poche made his Major League debut, the Rays have several options as to how they can utilize the left-hander. Poche threw 21 of 24 pitches for strikes over 1 1/3 innings in the Game 2 loss on Saturday.

“He’s pretty neutral,” Cash said. “He’s quick to get righties and lefties out. I think having [Adam] Kolarek down there who’s a big, big split guy is probably more the guy that comes in and gets one lefty or two when it’s lopsided.

“But Poche, we have confidence that he can come in and get righties and lefties out. He’s pitched a lot of multiple roles in [Triple-A] Durham. He’s gone multiple innings, he’s opened. I think more than anything, we’ll see how he kind of adjusts to being on this team, on this staff. But that start looked really, really good yesterday.”
