NEW YORK -- The Phillies added potential outfield depth to the organization by signing Tommy Pham to a Minor League contract, a source confirmed to MLB.com.
The deal, which the club has not yet confirmed, was first reported by ESPN's Jorge Castillo.
Pham will likely join Triple-A Lehigh Valley once he reports. The deal has an opt-out clause that Pham can activate if he's not in the Majors by July 25.
The 38-year-old Pham began the season with the Mets, but he was designated for assignment on April 27 after starting 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts. He then signed a Minor League deal with the O's on May 16, only to be released on June 12 after hitting .197 (12-for-61) with four homers and 21 K's over 16 games with Triple-A Norfolk.
Pham spent last season with the Pirates, hitting .245 with 10 homers, 52 RBIs and a .700 OPS over 120 games.
Overall, Pham has a .256/.344/.421 career slash line while playing for 10 big league teams over his 13 seasons. And while he hit left-handed pitching well early in his career, Pham has hit just .230 with a .716 OPS vs. southpaws since 2021 (compared to .245 with a .703 OPS vs. righties during that span).
Still, the Phillies are at least going to give him a look in the Minors as they continue their search for outfield depth.
Already thin at the position entering the season, the Phils were dealt another blow earlier this month when they lost right fielder Adolis García to a season-ending injury. They've since traded for Derek Hill and promoted prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr., but they're still lacking consistent production from the outfield.
Rincones entered Sunday hitting .118 (4-for-34) with nine strikeouts and zero walks through his first 10 big league games. He was not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale, instead giving way to Hill, who has played well since being acquired from the White Sox on June 11.
The Phillies have essentially been operating with a pair of outfield platoons alongside Brandon Marsh since García's injury. Hill and converted infielder Edmundo Sosa have been starting vs. left-handers, while Rincones and Justin Crawford have gotten the call against righties.
Phillies outfielders entered Sunday with a .679 collective OPS this season, which ranked 25th in the Majors. Aside from Marsh, though, the rest of the Phillies' outfielders are slashing a combined .212/.267/.332 (.599 OPS).
