Appeal throw to 3rd does not end well for Pirates

September 15th, 2019

CHICAGO -- The Pirates apparently believed one of the Cubs baserunners missed third base on speedster 's two-run, pinch-hit triple in the third inning on Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Their method of trying to prove it left something to be desired.

With Kemp standing on third base and Ian Happ at the plate, Pittsburgh reliever Michael Feliz stepped off the rubber and tried to toss the ball to third baseman Erik Gonzalez for the traditional appeal on such plays. But Feliz airmailed the pressure-free throw, lobbing it over Gonzalez’s head and into foul territory.

Kemp easily scored on the error, giving the Cubs an 8-5 lead. Chicago would go on to win the game, 16-6.
