Travis Kelce's first pitch at Guardians' opener goes awry

April 8th, 2023

Wearing a "I'm from Cleveland" T-shirt under a custom-made No. 87 Guardians jersey and accompanied to the mound by his mother, Cleveland native and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce made quite the impression before the Guardians' home opener on Friday afternoon.

A three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at Cleveland Heights High School, the two-time Super Bowl champion wound up and threw the pitch to ace Shane Bieber behind the plate.

Instead of connecting with Bieber's mitt, however, Kelce spiked the pitch like he would spike a football after celebrating one of his vintage touchdowns. The ball skipped past Bieber to the backstop, which led to Kelce immediately sprinting to and embracing Bieber with a big smile while also laughing.

Next time he sees him, Kelce might need some throwing advice from teammate Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes, who played baseball at high school and appeared in three games while at Texas Tech, wasted no time wasted no time reacting to his teammate's botched pitch and suggested the Royals give Kelce a second chance.
