Two former players with lasting MLB legacies will retake the field in July to manage some of the players with the brightest futures in baseball.
Legendary Padres closer Trevor Hoffman and six-time All-Star Moises Alou were named the managers of the 2016 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Friday. Hoffman will helm the U.S. team, and Alou will lead the World team at Petco Park in San Diego on July 10 at 4 p.m. PT during All-Star Week.
This will be the 18th Futures Game -- a full nine-inning game featuring the top Minor League prospects in baseball. The U.S. leads the all-time series, 11-6.
Hoffman is the hometown hero, having amassed 601 career saves -- second most all-time -- in an 18-year Major League career spent mostly with the Padres. The seven-time All-Star, who also helped lead San Diego to the National League pennant in 1998, is currently a senior advisor of baseball operations for the Friars.
"To have the main event in your own city, it's an honor," Hoffman said. "If there's an opportunity to maybe pass along some knowledge and maybe help a kid get comfortable … we're talking about kids that are close and that are going to make an impact at the big league level -- so to have an opportunity to be around them is fabulous. And to represent the Padres and San Diego itself at the Midsummer Classic, it's pretty special."
Hoffman and Hall of Famer Dave Winfield are serving as ambassadors to promote the 2016 All-Star Game.
Alou, who played for seven teams over 17 seasons in the big leagues, now serves as a special assistant of player development for the Padres. After he retired, Alou also became the general manager of Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League, as well as the 2013 Dominican national team that won the World Baseball Classic.

"I never managed before, but right away I jumped at the opportunity, because I know how big it is for these young, talented players being in this game," said Alou, whose father, Felipe, won 1,033 games as a big league manager. "I just wanted to be a part of it.
"I wanted to share the opportunity to share some memories and stories and to tell these guys they are really blessed to be in a game like that, and to go out there to enjoy it and have a lot of fun."
The remainder of the 2016 All-Star Futures Game coaching staffs, as well as rosters and umpires, will be announced in the coming weeks.

As part of its live All-Star Week programming, MLB Network will exclusively televise and MLB.com will live stream the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, with Matt Vasgersian, Dan Plesac, Heidi Watney and MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo on the call live from Petco Park.
SiriusXM, the Official Satellite Radio Partner of Major League Baseball, will provide live play-by-play coverage of the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on MLB Network Radio (XM channel 89; Sirius channel 209) in addition to SiriusXM's other comprehensive live coverage from San Diego.
