Yanks prospect turns season around with no-no

July 26th, 2019

A rough season for the Yankees’ eighth-ranked prospect crested to an extremely bright spot Friday.

Right-hander Trevor Stephan twirled a seven-inning no-hitter for Class A Advanced Tampa in its 2-0 win over Jupiter, the Marlins’ Class A affiliate, in the first leg of a doubleheader at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Stephan set down Jupiter’s first 12 hitters in order -- including Marlins No. 3 prospect Victor Victor Mesa and 2019 first-round Draft pick JJ Bleday -- before catcher Nick Fortes reached on an error to begin the fifth inning. That was the only Jupiter player to reach base all afternoon, as Stephan retired the final nine hitters in order and racked up a season-high nine strikeouts in the first shutout of his career.

Stephan’s gem was made more unlikely by his slow start to 2019. The University of Arkansas grad logged three weeks on the injured list with a back issue and went 1-4 with a 6.27 ERA in 10 starts with Double-A Trenton before he was sent down to Tampa in late June. His no-no Friday was Tampa’s first since Aug. 6, 2018 (Deivi Garcia and Christian Morris, eight innings) and the 22nd overall recorded in the Minor Leagues this season.
