BALTIMORE -- Trey Mancini proved to be Wednesday night's hero with a three-run walk-off homer in the 11th inning, lifting the Orioles to a 9-6 victory over the Pirates at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
With two on and two out, Mancini stepped to the plate against Wade LeBlanc, who surrendered Mark Trumbo's walk-off single on Tuesday night. On the first pitch he saw, Mancini sent the pitch to the stands with an exit velocity of 108.8 mph, per Statcast™, to give the Orioles their sixth walk-off win of the year. The Orioles also improved their extra-innings record to 9-1.
Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, the Orioles put runners on the corners with no outs, prompting the Pirates to call on closer Tony Watson, who was fresh off his fourth blown save of the season on Tuesday. After a sacrifice fly by Joey Rickard and a double by J.J. Hardy, the Orioles cut the deficit to two. Down to the team's final out, Mancini pinch-hit for Seth Smith and knocked a two-run homer on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to knot the game at 6 and force extras.

Mancini became the first player since Atlanta's Brian McCann (May 17, 2011) to knock a game-tying pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning or later followed by a walk-off shot during the regular season.
"Again, baseball is the game where you never know what can happen," Mancini said. "Along with that, I can't say enough about the rest of the game here. We're down here 6-2 in the ninth inning, and everybody battles back, has great at-bats and gave me the opportunity to come up there in the ninth, so without that, none of that happens."

Adam Jones hit a solo shot in the eighth that brought the Orioles within four runs of the Pirates. The late rally picked up Orioles starter Wade Miley, who gave up four runs on eight hits with two walks in just 2 2/3 frames. He labored with 83 pitches (46 strikes).

The Pirates jumped ahead early after a pair of two-run doubles by Max Moroff and Elias Diaz in the second and third innings. Jose Osuna tacked on two more with a two-run homer in the seventh that gave the Pirates a 6-1 lead. Pirates starter Chad Kuhl allowed just one run on four hits through five innings and walked four batters.
"Well, they're challenging, there's no doubt," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "When you come in and you're able to put some runs up and the other team's able to come back and tie you up late and then walk you off, it's tough. It's happened to us before. You never like it."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Double duty: Diaz, who replaced Francisco Cervelli in the lineup after being placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list, stepped to the plate with runners on first and second in the third inning. He drove the second pitch to deep right, clearing the bases and giving the Pirates a 4-1 lead. The double was just one part of the huge game for the catcher, as Diaz picked off Trumbo at third base to end the fourth.

Sticking with Watson: Watson entered Wednesday's game with four blown saves, with three of them coming in just the last two weeks. After he was unable to close out the ninth on Tuesday, Hurdle turned to him when Johnny Barbato allowed the first two runners to reach on Wednesday. With a four-run lead, dominant reliever Felipe Rivero (0.60 ERA) remained in the bullpen. Rivero would pitch a scoreless 10th, striking out two batters.
"I have [given second chances] in the past," Hurdle said. "We actually did it with Tony last year. I've done it with [Mark] Melancon, I've done it with every closer that we've had here. I make decisions, and if they don't work out, they are on me. It squarely falls on me. I believe in the men. I don't put it on them. I made a decision that didn't work out. We talk about ownership in this game. We talk about it on the field. The manager's got to take ownership with some things as well." More >

MACHADO INJURED
Orioles third baseman Manny Machado exited the game before the start of the fourth inning after getting cleated in the glove hand while putting a tag on Andrew McCutchen in the second.
"On the top of his left hand. Obviously, a spike with a slide," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He had an X-ray, which was negative. They're talking about getting an MRI tomorrow just to be on the safe side, make sure we know what we're dealing with. So we'll see if and when that can get set up. He got pretty sore. Went down in the cage and didn't feel good swinging the bat, so decided to be cautious." More >

Edwin Jackson put on an Orioles uniform for the first time on Wednesday night, making it his 12th team during a 15-year Major League career. In the 11th inning, Gregory Polanco was called out at first on a pickoff attempt by Orioles pitcher Mychal Givens. After a manager's challenge by Pittsburgh, the call on the field was overturned. The review lasted 59 seconds.

WHAT'S NEXT
Pirates: The Pirates will begin a 10-game homestand at 7:05 p.m. ET on Thursday with the Marlins. Gerrit Cole will take the mound for the Bucs and is just one strikeout away from 600 in his career. Cole is coming off of a shaky start in New York, giving up seven runs on eight hits, including three homers, over five innings.
