Unlike the batter's Triple Crown, where the rare combination of hitting for power and a high average led to a nearly five-decade gap between the most recent two winners, the pitcher's Triple Crown is slightly more common, with winners in each league as recently as 2011.

However, leading one's league in wins, ERA and strikeouts isn't exactly a walk in the park. Even with Shane Bieber accomplishing the feat in 2020, it has only happened six times since the turn of the century.

In the entire decade of the 1980s, Dwight Gooden was the only pitcher to win the Triple Crown. In the '70s, Steve Carlton was the lone hurler to do it. And other than Sandy Koufax -- a three-time Triple Crown winner from 1963-66 -- no pitcher led his league in all three categories from Hal Newhouser in '45 until Carlton's epic '72 season.
