MINNEAPOLIS -- The first wave of September callups came on Friday for the Twins. The club called up left-handed relievers Nik Turley and Player Page for Buddy Boshers from Triple-A Rochester, and selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum from Rochester. Left-hander Hector Santiago was placed on the 60-day disabled list to clear a spot for Goodrum on the 40-man roster.
Boshers logged 1 1/3 scoreless innings in Friday night's 7-6 loss to the Royals, lowering his ERA to 4.94.
Turley has seen action with the Twins this season, while Goodrum is getting the call for the first time in his career. The club plans to call up more players this month, but Triple-A Rochester is in a postseason race and Double-A Chattanooga is heading to the playoffs.
"We were looking for another lefty for situations and Boshers fits that bill, while Turley is more suited for length," manager Paul Molitor said. "With Niko, he's had a good year down there and his right-handed bat has been a little bit better than left-handed. He's very versatile. We had been playing with a three-man bench, and while we didn't expand tremendously, at least I have another body to work with."
Turley, 27, entered Friday with a 12.51 ERA for the Twins, striking out 10 and walking five in 13 2/3 innings. He's fared much better in Rochester with a 2.66 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings.

Goodrum, a second-round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, is headed to the Majors after eight years in the Minors. He's had a solid year at Triple-A, hitting .265/.309/.425 with 13 homers and 66 RBIs while mostly splitting time between shortstop and right field. The 25-year-old gives the Twins extra outfield depth with Byron Buxton nursing a left hand contusion and Robbie Grossman on the disabled list. Goodrum can play all three outfield positions as well as any infield position.

"It's exciting," Goodrum said. "It's something you dream about since you were little. For it to finally happen, it's mind-blowing. This is my eighth season so it's been a long journey. There were some ups and downs, so to get here, it feels good."
Worth noting
• Buxton entered as a pinch-runner in the ninth inning against the Royals. Molitor said they want to make sure Buxton's hand isn't bothering him while hitting before he returns.
• Catcher Jason Castro (concussion) had his best day on Thursday, Molitor said, participating in a full workout without any issues. He's also progressed to hitting and is only a few days away from being activated if all goes well.
• Even though Santiago was placed on the 60-day DL, Molitor said he's not out for the season because it's retroactive to July 3. Santiago, out with an upper back strain, makes another rehab start on Sunday with Rochester, and could return after that, but they'd like to see his velocity improve.
