Twins’ home opener moved to Friday due to weather

April 4th, 2023

MIAMI -- With weather forecasts calling for snow and cold temperatures, the Twins announced on Tuesday that their 2023 home opener has been pushed back a day to Friday.

The anticipated date had been Thursday, which would have been a one-day turnaround for Minnesota after it wraps up its three-game series at the Marlins.

According to weather reports, wintry conditions are expected Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. The forecast calls for more favorable baseball playing conditions on Friday, with sunshine and a high temperature of 52 expected.

“It doesn’t affect us very much at all,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “There are times during the year where if games are moved, we have to shuffle a lot of different things. In this instance, it really doesn’t change much.”

Right-hander is scheduled to start for the Twins on Friday against the Astros at Target Field. Houston is starting Jose Urquidy. The first pitch is slated for 3:10 p.m. CT.

“We talked to Sonny very early on and told him that this could be a possibility,” Baldelli said. “He said that’s not going to affect his bullpens and that’s not going to affect his throwing program.”

Prior to the game, Breakfast on the Plaza will take place from 6-9 a.m., and gates will open at 1 p.m.

Originally, Friday was a scheduled off-day, which gave the Twins the flexibility to change the home opening date, in case of inclement conditions.
