"He's been swinging well," Twins manager Paul Molitor said before the game. "... We thought he might be a good match for us as far as trying to help our offense get going a little bit."

Cave, acquired in a trade with the Yankees in March, split the 2017 season between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, hitting .305 with 26 doubles, five triples, 20 home runs, 56 RBIs, 66 runs scored and a .351 on-base percentage. The 6-foot, 200-pound Cave was selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 2011 Draft. The Hampton, Va., native was named an Organization All-Star by MiLB.com after the 2017 season.

Cave is taking the 25-man roster spot of outfielder Ryan LaMarre, who was optioned to Rochester after Sunday's 2-0 win over Texas.

Worth noting

• Twins right-hander Ervin Santana threw a 60-pitch bullpen session without any issues on Monday and will begin a rehab assignment with Class A Advanced Fort Myers on Saturday. Santana, who is coming off surgery on his right middle finger, is scheduled to throw three innings and 45 pitches. The Twins would like to see him improve his velocity before he returns.

• Shortstop Jorge Polanco took part in Santana's live bullpen session on Monday and played shortstop for Fort Myers on Tuesday. Polanco has been dealing with an infected right index finger after he shut it in a door, but the Twins remain hopeful he won't need to be placed on the 10-day disabled list. He must return from his 80-game suspension on July 2 or be placed on the DL.
