MINNEAPOLIS -- A day after he exited the second game of Thursday's doubleheader after three innings, the Twins placed left-hander Tommy Milone on the 15-day disabled list Friday with left biceps tendinitis and recalled lefty Pat Dean from Triple-A Rochester.
Milone dealt with tightness in the front of his throwing shoulder during Thursday's 10-2 loss to the Astros in Game 2, giving up five runs on five hits. He is 3-4 with a 5.68 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) for the Twins this season. He said he's been dealing with the injury for about a month, but it started to flare up more often once he moved to the bullpen after his start on July 30.
"It's just one of those things where you have to give it some time and let it do its thing," Milone said. "Hopefully, it'll be two weeks or just a little bit longer."
Dean was 5-7 with a 5.56 ERA in 16 starts for the Red Wings. Dean last started for Rochester on Tuesday, but lasted 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits. He gave the Twins three much-needed innings in relief in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Royals, giving up one run on a solo homer to Kendrys Morales in the seventh. But it was the lone run he allowed and he struck out six.

Like Milone, who underwent an MRI exam on his shoulder on Friday, fellow injured reliever Trevor May had more testing done on his lower back. May, who is on the DL retroactive to Sunday with a lower back strain, went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on Thursday. The initial testing found that the issue is muscular but he'll undergo a bone scan as a precaution.
"It's just to eliminate anything else potentially," Molitor said. "The diagnosis in Rochester centered around muscular issues. There was some imbalance from one side to the other because of some overcompensation causing the problems. But they haven't eliminated everything so they're going to do more testing."
