SAN DIEGO -- The way Tyler Chatwood was dealing Saturday, the Rockies didn't need much offense. Nolan Arenado and Ian Desmond provided the thump anyway, sparking a 10-1 Colorado victory and snapping the Padres' five-game winning streak.
Arenado launched a two-run shot in the top of the fifth inning, before Desmond put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the seventh. It was Desmond's third homer since he signed with the Rockies during the offseason -- all three of which have come at Petco Park.

Desmond's third career slam gave Chatwood more than enough breathing room. The Rockies' right-hander pitched eight innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Chatwood -- whose road ERA dipped to 2.68 compared with a home mark over 7 -- even got in on the fun offensively. He sparked a three-run rally in the fifth inning with a double, then singled and scored on a DJ LeMahieu hit in the top of the eighth.

Chatwood overcame a couple of pitfalls. His confidence in his fastball and cutter sometimes leads him to rely on it, but he mixed in curveballs and sliders. Chatwood, admired by the team for his competitive spirit. worked with catcher Tony Wolters, who not only reminded him about mixing pitches but also reminded him to breathe and not rush between pitches.
"I had a good feel for all the pitches, Tony called a great game, and I was able to execute more pitches. That was a big key," Chatwood said.
Chatwood carries heavy expectations. Having broken in with the Angels in 2011, he's the Rockies' most experienced pitcher. However, he's still just 27, and he missed most of 2014 and all of 2015 because of Tommy John surgery. So he's still learning the craft.
"In this day and age, we critically evaluate each and every outing, but where this guy can get to is much higher than where it is now," Rockies manager Bud Black said.
Facing his former club for the first time, Padres righty Jhoulys Chacin allowed four runs (three earned) while striking out seven over six innings. In four previous starts at Petco Park this season, Chacin had allowed two runs combined
"One bad pitch to Arenado, but aside from that, he was great," said Padres catcher Austin Hedges. "The slider and the sinker were working very well. They're a good team, and they're tough to pitch to."

Hedges' fifth-inning homer was the Padres' only offense -- one night after they tied a season high with 14 hits. The solo blast was Hedges' third in three starts, and his 11th this year, putting him halfway to equaling Mike Piazza's 2006 franchise record for the most by a catcher in a season.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Nolan keeps rollin': Chacin and Arenado spent two seasons as teammates with the Rockies, and they faced each other for the first time Saturday. Arenado got the better of that matchup, capitalizing on a hanging slider from Chacin with two outs in the fifth. The Rockies' third baseman sent it a projected 428 feet into the second deck in left field, giving Colorado a 4-0 lead. It was Arenado's fourth-longest home run away from Coors Field in the Statcast™ era.
"There's a hanging slider to Arenado that's hit and hit hard," said Padres manager Andy Green. "Outside of that, [Chacin] competed very well, kept us in the ballgame, gave us a chance to win. We just couldn't muster much off Chatwood today."

Arenado, who tied Mark Reynolds for the team homers lead with 14 and later had a sacrifice fly, is 6-for-17 with two homers, two doubles and four RBIs on the Rockies' current road trip.
"Overall, better at-bats, seeing the ball better," Black said.

Just dropping in: With one out in the fourth, Carlos Gonzalez skyed a popup to shallow right field, and Padres second baseman Yangervis Solarte camped under it. But the ball dropped when Solarte hesitated, possibly believing he'd been called off by right fielder Hunter Renfroe, who never made an attempt. Gonzalez would score an unearned run two batters later on Gerardo Parra's RBI single.

All three of Desmond's homers this season -- which began for him April 30, after he missed the beginning of the year due to a broken left hand -- have come at Petco Park. Before this season, Desmond had five homers in 91 career at-bats at Petco.
UPON REVIEW
The Rockies scored twice in the eighth and had a chance at more runs after a review went their way in the eighth. With one out, Padres shortstop Chase d'Arnaud ranged just behind the second-base bag to grab Gonzalez's grounder and threw to first. Originally, umpires ruled that d'Arnaud tapped second as he glided by. But after the Rockies challenged, the call was overturned when replay showed that d'Arnaud's foot barely missed the bag.

Rockies: Young right-hander Jeff Hoffman (2-0, 3.29 ERA) has been called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his third Major League start of 2017 in the series finale at Petco Park, beginning at 2:40 p.m. MT. In a corresponding move, lefty Tyler Anderson (3-5, 5.85) is headed to the 10-day disabled list with left knee inflammation.
Padres:Jarred Cosart has walked 16 batters in 20 innings this season. The Padres feel the right-hander can be effective when he's in the zone, but he simply hasn't thrown enough strikes. He starts Sunday's series finale with the first pitch slated for 1:40 p.m. PT.
