CHICAGO -- The Blue Jays swung a small deal in the middle of Saturday’s game, acquiring infielder Tyler Fitzgerald from the Giants for cash considerations.
Fitzgerald, who was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday, will join the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
This is a sensible area for the Blue Jays to add to, given that Fitzgerald primarily plays second base with some shortstop and corner outfield mixed in. After the Blue Jays traded Leo Jimenez to the Marlins on Sunday night, their infield depth in Triple-A is fairly limited. Fitzgerald gives them an option on their own 40-man roster now with an option year remaining if a short-term need arises.
If the Blue Jays are looking long-term, it still feels like No. 13 prospect Josh Kasevich would be the next man up if a need arises.
Fitzgerald struggled in 2025 with the Giants, but his ‘24 season represents his potential ceiling. That season, Fitzgerald hit .280 with 15 home runs and an .831 OPS over 96 games. His ticket into any lineup is crushing left-handed pitching, which he did particularly well that season. In many ways, it’s a profile similar to Davis Schneider’s.
There’s also some baserunning upside to Fitzgerald, who stole 17 bases in 21 attempts in 2024.
As it stands now, the Blue Jays are rolling with a set infield of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first, Ernie Clement at second, Andrés Giménez at shortstop and Kazuma Okamoto at third. Having Schneider and Addison Barger slide in from the outfield is the club’s backup plan for the time being, but more infield depth will surely be needed throughout the season.
