VIERA, Fla. -- The Nationals placed first baseman/outfielder Tyler Moore on waivers, three sources confirmed to MLB.com. The Washington Post was the first to report the transaction on Thursday. The club has not confirmed.
Moore can be claimed by any team if it has a spot open on its 40-man roster. The National League team with the worst record has first dibs on Moore. If he is unclaimed, Moore can be outrighted to the Minor Leagues.
Moore did not have a productive Spring Training, going 4-for-31 (.129) with two home runs and three RBIs. Two sources said he had a slim chance to make the team because Clint Robinson is the backup first baseman and Michael Taylor should be the fourth outfielder. Manager Dusty Baker even had Moore try third base this spring, but the chances of him playing that position during the regular season were slim as well.
Moore spent four years with the Nationals and hit .228 with 24 home runs and 91 RBIs. His best season was his rookie year in 2012, when he hit .263 with a career-high 10 home runs and 29 RBIs over 75 games. After that, he had a tough time staying in the Major Leagues because he couldn't produce off the bench. Moore had a .121 career batting average as a pinch-hitter.
