What it's like in a Major League clubhouse

September 1st, 2022

Ever wonder what happens in a Major League clubhouse? Well, wonder no more, as former MLB right-hander Ron Darling and former MLB shortstop Jimmy Rollins discuss the ins and outs of clubhouse etiquette, chemistry and even tension that can boil over on the latest episode of the Unwritten podcast.

“Every Major League Baseball stadium has an inner sanctum: the clubhouse,” says Darling. “Most things that happen in the clubhouse stay in the clubhouse, but today, we’re going to take you behind that door.”

So what are the unwritten rules of an MLB clubhouse? What happens during a typical day of a game, both before and after? How do players get themselves prepared, physically and mentally? What do the clubhouse attendants do? Who controls the music?

Allow Darling and Rollins, who have a combined 30 years of experience in big league clubhouses, to take you behind the scenes.

Also, a pro tip from Darling: Don’t get into a fight with a guy who’s on the injured list. Oh, and Rollins has some advice, too; it has to do with almost getting into fisticuffs over music selection.

“For me, my pride, and $11 million, [it wasn’t worth it],” Rollins said.
