V-Mart wins AL Player of Week with vintage show

Slugger hits .519 with three homers, five doubles, five multihit games

May 2nd, 2016

CLEVELAND -- Victor Martinez capped a historic April with a flourish. For that, he earned American League Player of the Week honors.
It's the first Player of the Week nod for Martinez since May 15, 2011, his first season in Detroit, and his fifth such award overall.

Martinez batted .519 (14-for-27) for the week with three home runs, five doubles, eight RBIs and eight runs scored. He tested the depths of Comerica Park with an estimated 425-foot home run over the out-of-town scoreboard in right-center field on Monday against the A's, doubled in Detroit's lone run the next night, then hit a three-run homer the following night.
"He looks much more similar to the 2014 V-Mart than he did in 2015," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Wednesday. "Not even close for me."

Martinez took his hitting tear into the weekend at Minnesota, where he homered again in a four-hit game Friday night, doubled twice on Saturday, then added three more hits Sunday.
Martinez entered Monday's off-day leading the AL with a 1.072 OPS, trailing only Josh Donaldson with a .663 slugging percentage, and third in the league with a .350 batting average. He's one behind the AL doubles lead with 10.

Martinez was part of a vaunted Tigers lineup that has Detroit carrying a five-game winning streak into Tuesday's game against the Indians at Progressive Field. The second-place Tigers went 6-1 last week.
Several other Tigers were considered for the weekly honor, including first baseman Miguel Cabrera (.387, three homers), Nick Castellanos (.440, eight RBIs, .840 slugging percentage) and right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (2-0, 1.32 ERA). Zimmermann was named the AL Pitcher of the Month.
