ST. PETERSBURG -- White Sox right-hander Vince Velasquez was scratched from his scheduled start Friday night against the Rays after being placed on the 15-day injured list with a groin injury. Right-hander Davis Martin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Velasquez.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Velasquez (2-3, 5.30 ERA) was injured Wednesday in Toronto while shagging balls during batting practice. His IL stint was made retroactive to Tuesday.

“He came in [Wednesday] and said he felt something [in his groin area],’’ La Russa said. “We gave it 24 hours. He’ll be out at least for the [15-day IL] period. It’s always disruptive to an organization. We’re beat up.’’

The White Sox have seven players on the injured list, including shortstop Tim Anderson (right groin strain), outfielder Eloy Jiménez (torn right hamstring) and right-hander Lance Lynn (torn right knee tendon). All are expected back this month.

“Every time I look at our [injured] list, I think, ‘We’ve got our share,’ ‘’ La Russa said. “We’ve got to handle it and deal with it. I don’t want to say that [the White Sox have an abundance of injuries] because nobody cares. On the flip side, when I look at the lineup we’re playing today, we can win with it. I don’t feel disadvantaged. We’re deep enough to compete.’’

The White Sox were boosted by the return of closer Kendall Graveman and right-hander Dylan Cease from the restricted list. Neither made the trip to Toronto because they are unvaccinated.

Graveman went to Charlotte and threw a bullpen session Wednesday.

“I feel refreshed,’’ Graveman said. “I’d like to say thank you to the organization because they’ve been supportive of allowing me to make a decision [on being unvaccinated]. I think that was something where they didn’t have to take that route. I respect the organization as a whole … and it’s something I don’t take for granted. I think it’s a positive, and it shows our organization has a ton of class.’’

La Russa said there were no games in Toronto where Graveman likely would have been used. Cease will start Saturday as part of his regular turn in the rotation.
