PHILADELPHIA -- Vince Velasquez, like most Phillies fans, still cannot believe he made a left-handed throw to first base in the second inning of Saturday night's victory over the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park.
"That was awesome," Velasquez said Sunday. "I've watched it, like, 20 times. It's just crazy. It's mind-blowing."
However, the play that immediately preceded it -- a 96-mph line drive striking Velasquez's right arm -- put him on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday. The Phillies said Velasquez has a bruised right forearm. He could rejoin the Phillies' rotation as early as July 11 against the Mets at Citi Field, but his absence means the Phillies will need a starting pitcher for one of the two games in a July 9 doubleheader and for the July 10 game in the same series against New York.
On Sunday, the Phillies also activated right-hander Pat Neshek from the DL and recalled right-hander Jake Thompson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. They optioned left-hander Zac Curtis to Lehigh Valley. Both Neshek and Thompson were summoned in relief in Philadelphia's 4-3, 13-inning win over Washington; Neshek went one-third of an inning and Thompson walked two and struck out two in three scoreless frames.

Thompson's arrival does not mean that he will take Velasquez's spot in the rotation. Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said those decisions will not be made until a later date.
Everything is on the table.
"Just having a full recovery and not really trying to be too pushy with it," Velasquez said about the decision to put him on the DL. "And we have two days off coming up, and we're just going to play it safe."
Velasquez said he felt "pretty sore" Sunday, but better than Saturday night.
"A lot more movement going on," Velasquez said.
Velasquez said his chances of rejoining the rotation as early as July 11 are good.
