The Blue Jays vanquished the Yankees with a 5-2 victory in Game 4 of their American League Division Series on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, sending Toronto to its first AL Championship Series since 2016.
There were contributions from up and down the Jays' lineup throughout the series despite the absence of Bo Bichette, who is working his way back from a knee injury. But the player of this series was superstar first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who went 9-for-17 (.529) with three home runs and nine RBIs.
Naturally, Vladdy was excited after his club punched its ticket to the ALCS. In fact, he was so excited, he had a little fun with a postseason legend during FS1's postgame studio coverage. In Spanish, Guerrero asked David Ortiz to say what has become one of Ortiz's famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) lines following Yankees losses.
Ortiz, who helped fuel the greatest comeback in postseason history when his Red Sox erased a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS to defeat the archrival Bronx Bombers in 2004, gladly obliged.
"DAAAAAA Yankees lose!" the two shouted in unison. They then repeated the refrain -- a play on former Yankees broadcaster John Sterling’s signature call, “THEEEEEE Yankees win!” -- a couple more times for good measure.
Although he poked a little fun at the Yanks during the postgame celebration, Guerrero was clear that there's nothing extra special for him about defeating the Yankees.
Since we're talking postseason legends, it's only fitting to add Derek Jeter to the mix, and that's what happened just before Guerrero and Ortiz teamed up.
"How much do you enjoy playing the New York Yankees?" Jeter asked Guerrero. "It seems like you take it personal every time you play them."
In 50 career games at Yankee Stadium, including the two postseason games this year, Guerrero has 17 home runs and a 1.013 OPS.
"I like playing here,” Guerrero told Jeter, part of the FS1 panel. “And every time I see the Yankees, I don’t know what happens with me. But to me, it’s nothing personal."
