Washington Nationals acquire Curtis Mead

The Washington Nationals acquired utility player Curtis Mead from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for catcher Boston Smith on Saturday. To make room on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher Jake Eder was designated for assignment. Nationals President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni made the announcement.

Mead, 25, hit .233 with 10 doubles, a triple, three home runs, 19 RBI, 15 walks, five stolen bases and 26 runs scored in 90 games between the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox last season. In 15 Triple-A games between the two organizations, he hit .300 with four doubles, three homers and nine RBI in 2025.

Originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an international free agent on May 4, 2018, Mead has played in parts of three Major League seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2023-25) and Chicago White Sox (2025). He has hit .238 with 16 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 31 RBI, 28 walks, seven stolen bases and 48 runs scored in 152 career MLB games.

A native of Adelaide, Australia, the right-handed hitting Mead is a career .298 hitter with 122 doubles, 12 triples, 57 home runs, 237 RBI, 155 walks, 37 stolen bases and 260 runs scored in six Minor League seasons.
