LOS ANGELES -- Having utilized 33 different pitchers so far in this rebuilding 2023 campaign, it is clear that the A’s are still in the process of identifying who can help them beyond this season. Ahead of Tuesday’s Trade Deadline, they added a couple of right-handers who could eventually become part of that mix.

In sending left-hander Sam Moll to the Reds and infielder Jace Peterson to the D-backs on Monday, the A’s acquired Joe Boyle, who was rated Cincinnati’s No. 28 prospect by MLB Pipeline, and Chad Patrick, a 2021 fourth-round Draft pick, from Arizona.

He’s a closer look at the newest members of the A’s system:

RHP Joe Boyle, Double-A Midland

Pipeline scouting report: For three years at Notre Dame, Boyle threw really hard, missed a lot of bats and walked a lot of hitters. The Reds felt it was worth rolling the dice on the power stuff in the pandemic-shortened 2020 Draft, taking him in the fifth round. He didn’t really get going until 2022, missing most of the 2021 season due to injury, but pitched his way to Double-A Chattanooga as a starter. He headed back to Chattanooga to start the 2023 season and continued to show a combination of swing-and-miss stuff and a lack of command.

The Reds let Boyle start in order to allow him to stretch out, work on all of his stuff and learn how to make adjustments in-game, from inning to inning. His fastball is still as high-octane as ever, averaging over 97 mph, with riding action to it, a pitch that would hit triple digits regularly in shorter relief stints for sure. His upper-80s slider with good power and tilt misses a ton of bats and he also has a slightly slower low-80s curve that can flash above-average at times.

As it’s been since his college days, finding the strike zone is the biggest question mark for the 6-foot-7 right-hander. Even without much deception in his delivery, it’s clear he’s going to rack up strikeouts at any level. He’s done a slightly better job on the walks front as a pro, but it’s still very much a work in progress. There likely will be a point in time when he gets moved to the bullpen, where command won’t be as much of an issue, but he’ll have to throw more strikes to earn high-leverage situations.

Organizational fit: Boyle moves into Oakland’s Top 30 prospects rankings at No. 22. The 23-year-old has posted a 4.50 ERA with 122 strikeouts and 75 walks across 84 innings at Double-A Chattanooga this season and will now shift over to the Texas League with Double-A Midland. Given the high walk totals, Boyle might be best suited for a bullpen role down the line, where his stuff could play up even better in shorter stints. For now, he’ll join the starting rotation at Midland, with a chance to reach Oakland at some point in 2024.

RHP Chad Patrick, Double-A Midland

Pipeline scouting report (from 2021 MLB Draft): Since what is now the Purdue Northwest program began at what was then Purdue Calumet in 2014, the Pride hadn't had a player drafted. That changed with Patrick, who broke out with an All-Star performance in the Northwoods League in Summer 2021. He opened '21 with 24 1/3 scoreless innings en route to winning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the year honors and ranking third in NCAA Division II in WHIP (0.80) and fourth in K/BB ratio (12.1).

Patrick's 91-95 mph fastball peaks at 97 and it isn't very lively, but it has good carry up in the zone. All three of his secondary pitches have the potential to become at least average, the best of which is his low-80s slider. He also employs a low-80s curveball and a mid-80s changeup with some fade and sink.

Patrick has a sound delivery and pounds the strike zone. He lacks ideal starter size at 6-foot-1, but he has a strong, 205-pound build, he's efficient and he maintains his velocity deep into games. If he can't stick in the rotation, he could have success as a reliever who focuses on his fastball and slider.

Organizational fit: Patrick will likely join Boyle in Midland’s rotation. In 19 starts at Double-A Amarillo this season, the 24-year-old holds a 4.71 ERA in 19 starts with 90 strikeouts and 36 walks in 91 2/3 innings.
