What to know before the State Liners home opener

June 3rd, 2021

The Bristol State Liners kick off their 2021 season in the new Appalachian League on Thursday, June 3 in Johnson City and then return home for the home opener on Saturday, June 5, at 6 p.m. Before our home opener, here’s a few things to know about the 2021 Bristol State Liners:

A new Appalachian League? What happened to the Pirates?

During the off season, the Appalachian League transitioned to a wooden bat league that will host the top rising collegiate freshmen and sophomores. As a new era of this historic league begins in 2021, it will do so as a part of the Major League Baseball and USA Baseball Prospect Development Pipeline (“PDP”). The PDP is a collaborative effort that establishes a player development pathway for amateur baseball players in the United States. With this transition, Appalachian League teams will no longer have affiliations with Major League Baseball teams.

How long is the season?

The new Appalachian League will feature a 54-game season with 27 games at home and 27 games away. The season will also feature a mid-season all-star game and a one game championship. The Appalachian League is also excited to host the Native American National Team for one game July 9. Details to come.

What is the caliber of talent?

In many ways, we think the level of talent that you will see on the field will be better than ever! The players are the top upcoming freshmen and sophomores in the nation! It may take them a little while to get comfortable with a wooden bat, so please be patient! After all, this is a development league!
