NEW YORK -- Jose Abreu had a very specific reaction to being fifth among American League first basemen as part of the first round of American League All-Star voting released on Tuesday.
"I'm very stunned," said a smiling Abreu through interpreter and White Sox Spanish language broadcaster Billy Russo. "For me to be in fifth place with my performance this year, it's very crazy. I'm glad that the fans have supported me.
"Probably I can take that like a motivation to try to do more than I'm trying to do. You feel good when you see that kind of support."
Abreu, who was named an All-Star in his rookie season of 2014, has garnered 189,963 votes. He trails the Royals' Eric Hosmer, who leads with 871,222. It has been a rough run this season for Abreu, who had gone 11 straight games without an RBI and hadn't homered since May 17, entering Tuesday with a .248 average, six homers and 27 RBIs.
Left fielder Melky Cabrera also drew some notice. He checked in at 10th among the outfielders, with a vote total of 248,249. Cabrera was an All-Star selection in '12.

Todd Frazier was not in the top five among third basemen.
