White Sox announce four roster moves

Prior to tonight's game vs. Detroit, the Chicago White Sox recalled outfielder Jason Coats and infielder Leury Garcia from Class AAA Charlotte and purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Blake Smith from Charlotte. The White Sox also returned right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from his rehab assignment with the Knights and returned him from the disabled list.

Gonzalez, 32, is scheduled to start tonight's game vs. the Tigers. He has been on the disabled list since August 12 with a strained right groin. Gonzalez is 2-6 with a 4.05 ERA (46 ER/102.1 IP) in 19 games (18 starts) this season, his first with Chicago.

Coats, 26, is hitting .189 (7-37) with two doubles, one home run and three RBI in 18 games over three stints with the White Sox in 2016. He is hitting .333 (6-18) vs. left-handers. Coats batted .330 (98-297) with 22 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 38 RBI, 25 walks, 44 runs scored and a .394 on-base percentage over 78 games with Charlotte this season.

Garcia, 25, has spent the entire 2016 season with Charlotte. He hit .313 (97-310) with nine doubles, four triples, six home runs, 35 RBI, 18 stolen bases and 45 runs scored over 84 games. He appeared in 28 games in left field, 25 at shortstop, 19 at second base and 12 in center field. Garcia has appeared in 137 major-leagues games with Texas (2013) and the White Sox (2013-15), hitting .181 (47-260) with four doubles, one triple, one home run and nine RBI. He will wear uniform No. 28.

Smith, 28, made 39 relief appearances with the Knights in 2016, going 3-1 with a 3.53 ERA (28 ER/71.1 IP), one save and 75 strikeouts. He limited right-handers to a .215 average (34-158) and .267 on-base percentage. Smith, who did not allow a run in 17 of his final 18 appearances this season, has no major-league experience and will wear uniform No. 68.

Smith, 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, was returned to Chicago from San Diego on March 27 after being selected by the Padres in the 2015 Rule 5 Draft. The Modesto, Calif. native was re-signed by the White Sox as a free agent on September 17, 2015 after being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for left-hander Eric Surkamp on May 22, 2015.

Smith has made 152 relief appearances over four seasons (2013-16) in the Dodgers (2013-15) and White Sox (2015-16) systems, going 8-14 with a 3.86 ERA (88 ER/205.1 IP), 15 saves and 212 strikeouts. He was converted to a pitcher during the 2013 season after beginning his career as an outfielder with the Dodgers. Smith originally was selected by Los Angeles-NL in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California-Berkeley.

Following the moves, the active roster increases to 31 and the 40-man roster moves to 40.
