CHICAGO -- Brett Lawrie has returned to Chicago from his rehab assignment with Double-A Birmingham and will be re-evaluated Monday. The White Sox should have more information on his status early next week.
 
The White Sox second baseman left early from last Wednesday's contest with the Barons and then departed after four innings Saturday in a return to the lineup. Lawrie has been battling a strained left hamstring, which has been described as an injury more in the knee area, but was said to have exited Wednesday's contest with quad soreness.
"He's going to have to play a full game to be able to get back here and know you're going to play," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Until he gets to that point where he can get enough of the innings that we need -- and all our guys can do that, whether it's [Avisaíl García] or even when Alex [Avila] goes out -- you're going to have to be able to get through it a few times to feel like you can come back up here and get off the DL."
Tyler Saladino, who has started at second in Lawrie's absence, missed a third straight game with a back issue, but Ventura hopes to have him back on Tuesday against the Phillies. Saladino was not ruled out completely Sunday, standing as one of three position players the White Sox had on the bench to go with eight relievers.
That one less bench player doesn't hamstring Ventura in his opinion.
"Not necessarily, because we have some versatility," Ventura said. "Sal and Sanch [Carlos Sanchez] you can play all over the infield. [Jason] Coats you can play around in the outfield.
"Your left-right [hitting matchups], you're a little hamstrung with what you can do but late in the game, you're not necessarily pinch-hitting for a lot of guys. For that, somebody pretty much has to go down for you to do something."
Rotation layout
Carlos Rodón and James Shields will stay on their regular turns on Tuesday and Wednesday in Interleague Play against the Phillies following Monday's off-day.
Anthony Ranaudo starts the four-game series against the Mariners on Thursday, and Chris Sale, coming off his 120-pitch victory Saturday, will have five days before his Friday start. That contest, which happens to be Elvis Night at U.S. Cellular Field, could feature a pitching matchup of Sale and Félix Hernández.
