Pipeline Preview: Giolito set to follow up no-hitter

May 31st, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: Danny Jansen (Blue Jays' No. 22), New Hampshire at Harrisburg (6:30 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Jansen has done nothing but hit this season, which, so far, has also been his healthiest since the Blue Jays made him their 16th-round pick in 2013. Promoted to Double-A New Hampshire in mid-May, the 22-year-old catcher has hit .364/.432/.515 during his first nine games in the Eastern League after slashing .369/.422/.541 with five homers in 31 games for Class A Advanced Dunedin. Overall, Jansen has recorded 57 hits in 40 games, with 17 strikeouts and 11 walks, between the two levels.

Pitcher to watch: (White Sox No. 4), Charlotte at Syracuse (5:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Giolito, MLB Pipeline's No. 31 overall prospect, made headlines by throwing a seven-inning no-hitter against his former organization when Triple-A Charlotte and Syracuse matched up last week. Suffice it to say it was a much-needed strong performance from the 22-year-old right-hander after he went 1-5 with a 6.41 ERA and eight home runs allowed in 39 1/3 innings (eight starts) to open the season. Meanwhile, Giolito will take the mound on an extra day's rest following Charlotte's rainout on Tuesday.

Duel of the day: Mike Soroka (Braves' No. 4) vs. Alex Young (D-backs' No. 11), Mississippi at Jackson (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Soroka, No. 69 on the Top 100, struck out the final five hitters he faced to finish with a career-high 10 strikeouts on a season-high 100 pitches (66 strikes) in his last start for Double-A Mississippi. The 19-year-old righty tossed 5 2/3 dominant innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks, en route to his fifth win. After spending his entire 2016 season with Class A Rome, Soroka has pitched to a 2.96 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP and a 51-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 48 2/3 innings (nine starts) in the Eastern League.

Young, 23, was sharp to begin the season, posting a 1.82 ERA in his first five starts for Double-A Jackson. The left-hander has struggled of late, however, as he's pitched to a 6.65 ERA over his last 21 2/3 innings (four starts) while allowing a .782 opponents' OPS in that span. Overall, he's 3-2 with a 4.08 ERA in 46 2/3 innings (eight starts).
