NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give the Mets a 4-3 win over the Phillies in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Monday night at Citi Field.
The homer was Flores' 10th career walk-off RBI -- surpassing David Wright for the most game-ending RBIs in team history -- and fourth this season. The victory also marked the Mets' 400th walk-off win.
Mets manager Mickey Callaway described Flores' clutch aptitude in his at-bat in extra innings.
"His ability to put a good swing on the ball," Callaway said of what makes Flores such a late-game threat. "He's been kind of on fire lately and tonight, big situation again and he put a good swing on probably a pitch that wasn't executed and he made him pay."
Zack Wheeler, who threw 4 2/3 innings while giving up three earned runs and striking out eight on the day, had a smile on his face when boasting about his teammate.
"It's almost getting to the point where you expect it. When the game is on the line, that's the guy you want to have up there," Wheeler said. "I like Wilmer, he's a good guy and I'm happy to see him be successful."
Asdrubal Cabrera kept the Mets' offense in the game early, going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run.

Cabrera's first at-bat was a solo shot to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the first after the Phillies had opened up the scoring in the top of the inning. Cabrera now has three home runs and seven RBIs in his last seven games.
In the third inning, Cabrera put the Mets ahead with an RBI double off the right-field wall that plated Jose Bautista after Brandon Nimmo had scored during the previous play on an error made by Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera.

A solo home run by Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco knotted the game at three in the fourth frame, where the score remained until the 10th inning.

The pitch before the home run, the Mets solicited a crew-chief review after it looked like Flores was hit by a pitch. The ruling on the field was he was not, but Flores felt he got struck by the ball. The call stood and the next pitch, Flores hit the ball off the left-field foul pole.

"It did hit him, we saw it on the replay and I just talked to him," Wheeler said. "But I'm glad they didn't overturn it."

It will be a night of Major League debuts, as both the Mets and Phillies have starters taking the mound for the first time in the big leagues on Tuesday at Citi Field. Righty Drew Gagnon owns a 2.45 ERA in his last five starts at Triple-A Las Vegas, and he is looking to continue his success with the big league club. Gagnon will oppose Phillies' right-handed prospect Enyel De Los Santos, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.
