Author W.P. Kinsella, whose 1982 novel "Shoeless Joe" was adapted into the film "Field of Dreams," has died at age 81.
Kinsella's literary agency confirmed to the Vancouver Sun that the Canadian writer died Friday in Hope, British Columbia.
Much of Kinsella's writing was focused on baseball, including his most famous work, "Shoeless Joe," a magical realism story featuring Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 White Sox about a farmer who builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield.
The novel was later adapted into an Academy Award-nominated feature film starring Kevin Costner. It grossed more than $84 million worldwide upon its release in 1989.
In 2011, Kinsella was awarded the Jack Graney Award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame for his contributions to baseball in Canada.
