Yadier Molina's immediate future with the Cardinals is yet to be determined, but the nine-time All-Star does know what his next step is on a baseball field will be: Helping the Criollos de Caguas, champions of this year’s Puerto Rican Winter League, try to capture the Caribbean Series title starting Sunday in Mazatlán, Mexico.

Molina is one of three catchers on Criollos' roster announced Wednesday for the traditional tournament of Latin American league champions.

The 38-year-old played this season on Atenienses de Manatí, a team managed by Molina's brother, former Major League catcher José. In one lopsided loss for the club, the youngest of the Molina brothers even made an appearance as a pitcher in the ninth inning. He then reinforced the Criollos in the island’s championship series this month, driving in four runs over four games and helping the team sweep the Indios de Mayagüez to win its 19th league title, most in Puerto Rican League history.

It was Molina’s first participation in his homeland’s winter ball circuit since the 2012-13 season with Gigantes de Carolina.

In an added twist, Molina is likely to face his longtime battery mate in St. Louis, Carlos Martínez, in the first game of the round-robin phase of the tournament. Martínez is slated to start Sunday afternoon for the Águilas Cibaeñas, whom “El Tsunami” helped capture the Dominican Winter League crown this month.

This will be Molina’s second Caribbean Series. In the 2007 tournament in Puerto Rico, he hit .188 (3-for-16) with two RBIs for the Gigantes, a club that featured brother José, Alex Cora and Juan González and finished with a 4-2 record, good for second place behind the champion Águilas from the D.R. (5-1).

The 2021 Caribbean Series will be played from Sunday through Feb. 6 between the winter league champions of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and Panama.
