Warren, Blackburn included on Yankees' Wild Card Series roster

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have announced their 26-man roster for the American League Wild Card Series against the Red Sox, opting for 12 pitchers and 14 position players.

Among their notable decisions, the Yankees will carry right-hander Will Warren, right-hander Paul Blackburn and catcher J.C. Escarra for this round.

Manager Aaron Boone said Blackburn “earned his way on” by pitching to a 0.90 ERA in 10 September innings, while Escarra provides protection to “make sure we’re covered on the catching side of things.”

Warren made 33 starts this season, going 9-8 with a 4.44 ERA, and will shift into a relief role for this series with Max Fried and Carlos Rodón lined up to start Games 1 and 2, respectively. Cam Schlittler would start a potential Game 3, Boone has confirmed.

Players left off the roster include right-hander Luis Gil, whose availability would be limited after he tossed 79 pitches in Sunday’s Game 162 against the Orioles; left-hander Ryan Yarbrough; and outfielder Austin Slater.

Left-hander Brent Headrick was also present for Monday’s Wild Card workout but not included on the roster.

“Headrick and Yarbs were very much in the mix,” Boone said. “[They] could definitely factor in still moving forward.”
