The Yankees have signed third-round pick Nolan Martinez for a $1.15 million bonus, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reported on Thursday. The club has not confirmed the deal.
New York went over the $608,200 slot value assigned to the No. 98 overall pick in order to land Martinez, a 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher from Culver City High School in California. Although Martinez had committed to San Diego State, he suggested after the Draft that he would be skipping college to go pro.
"I want to go play; I want to sign," Martinez said. "That's what I want to do."
Martinez, who will turn 18 on June 30, is listed on the roster for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Yankees.

Scouts have seen a solid three-pitch mix from Martinez, who pushed his fastball velocity as high as 93 mph this spring and also offers a curveball and changeup. As a high school senior, he used that arsenal to post a 0.49 ERA, with 17 walks and 81 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings.
"My fastball has been doing most of the damage this year, because most of the hitters couldn't catch up to it," Martinez said after the Draft. "I was just kind of plowing through with my fastball, and if they started catching up with it, I'd start throwing the breaking ball. My three-pitch combo has been really working out, so I think that was the biggest part in my stats this year."
