OAKLAND -- Alex Rodriguez accompanied the Yankees on their seven-game road trip against the D-backs and Athletics, but the team has decided to wait until they return home to activate him from the disabled list.
Rodriguez, recovering from a strained right hamstring, has not played since May 3 and was eligible to be activated on Thursday. Rodriguez worked out again on Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum, but he has expressed some hesitation in returning. Manager Joe Girardi said that they are now targeting Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.
"That's probably what we're looking at, just to give him those couple of extra days to make sure he's OK," Girardi said. "He's going to go through a bunch of stuff again today. He'll take BP here, but he's feeling pretty good."
Rodriguez, 40, is batting .194 (14-for-72) with five homers and 12 RBIs in 20 games. His absence has opened up the designated hitter role for Carlos Beltran, who logged another start there on Saturday.
"Hamstrings are always tricky," Rodriguez said. "The key for me is to be patient and be smart when I come back. When I come back, I want to come back for good and be ready to help the team win."
