NEW YORK -- The Yankees and Astros will have to wait one more day for a rematch.
Scheduled to open the season with a 2015 American League Wild Card Game reunion, Monday's Astros-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up at 1:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday, a day that was scheduled to be an off-day for both teams.
Snow and rain fell most of the morning, and forecasts called for a 75-percent chance of rain at the time first pitch was scheduled and a 100-percent chance two hours after game time.
Defending AL Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel and third-year veteran Masahiro Tanaka were scheduled to start for Houston and New York, respectively. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Tanaka will make his start Tuesday, but he was less clear on what the change in off-days could mean for the Yanks' rotation moving forward.
Tanaka's next scheduled start was expected to be Sunday in Detroit, with Tuesday's off-day giving him five days of rest instead of the regular four. With New York's Opening Day being pushed back, and Ivan Nova capable of making a spot start, Girardi could opt to be cautious with his injury-prone ace. But planning for the Yankees' series against the Tigers isn't on Girardi's mind right now.
"I'd like to get through these three days and see where we're at," Girardi said. "You're asking a hypothetical, which I'm not a big fan of, as everyone knows. Who knows? We might need Nova. You might need him for four or five innings on Wednesday, Thursday or something. To really think that far ahead doesn't make any sense."
Though there wasn't a game to be played Monday, Girardi did announce what the Yanks' lineup would have been and likely will be on Tuesday. Jacoby Ellsbury will lead off, followed by Aaron Hicks, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann, Chase Headley, Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius, with Brett Gardner -- who is a lifetime 0-for-7 with three strikeouts against Keuchel -- taking the day off.
Even though Gardner won't be starting, he does have one request for Tuesday's Opening Day.
"I know it'll be cold," Gardner said. "But hopefully it won't be wet."
