NEW YORK -- Austin Romine has had more pleasant afternoons at the office. Four innings after being hit in the throat by a foul ball, the Yankees catcher was drilled on the left hand by a fastball while batting, forcing him to exit early in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Rays.
Romine said he was "nervous" after he was drilled with a 91.4 mph fastball by Tampa Bay reliever Steve Cishek, but X-rays taken during the game were negative. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he expects Romine to avoid the disabled list, and Romine said that he plans on missing no time at all.
"It was some type of day back there, but it's part of the job," Romine said. "Just got to roll with it."
The scarier moment for the 28-year-old Romine came in the top of the second inning, when Adeiny Hechavarria's foul tip bounced off the dirt and clipped him in the throat. There was a short delay while Romine gathered himself.

"That was the first time in my 11-year career, getting a foul ball off the ground and into my neck," Romine said. "It took the breath from me and kind of felt like I had a golf ball in my throat for a little bit. It was hard to get some air for a little while. It calmed down, and I just kept playing."
After being plunked with Cishek's fastball in the bottom of the sixth, Romine stayed in the game to run the bases, but Gary Sanchez replaced him behind the plate for the top of the seventh inning.
"It got pretty swollen pretty quick, so I was a little nervous," Romine said. "[I felt] a little tingling. They said it's not broken, so it's just a bruise. I don't expect to miss any time. Jam it in the glove and let's go."
Romine is batting .235/.298/.315 with two homers and 20 RBIs in 56 games this season.
