Yanks push past Orioles after disputed foul call on Alonso blast

BALTIMORE – Pete Alonso went into full Carlton Fisk mode, hopping down the first-base line while tracking a towering seventh-inning drive toward left field. He raised both hands to his batting helmet and howled when the call on the field was a foul ball, then griped some more when a replay was said to be inconclusive.

Standing at the back of the mound, Brent Headrick didn’t complain, and neither did the Yankees. Instead, they took advantage – legged out a bases-loaded infield single and Jazz Chisholm Jr. raced home with another run on a wild pitch, sparking a 5-3 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night at Camden Yards.

In the New York eighth, Cam Sanders plunked two Yankees and issued a walk, setting up Lombard’s slow roller up the third-base line facing Yennier Cano. That particular swing might not have been a screamer, but Lombard has been stacking quality at-bats, improving to 4-for-7 with two RBIs since arriving in Baltimore.

Appearing to limp after diving back to third base, Chisholm didn’t hesitate to flash the wheels, sliding home safely head-first when Cano bounced a splitter.

Ben Rice hit his team-leading 34th home run and Ryan McMahon had a run-scoring single earlier in the contest, supporting Will Warren, who worked four innings of two-run ball before turning the game over to the bullpen. Alonso hit a third-inning homer off Warren, and Dylan Beavers hit a sixth-inning homer off Fernando Cruz that tied the score.
