SAN DIEGO -- Yankees rookie right-hander Conor Mullee was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with a hand issue after experiencing numbness in the fingers of his right hand on Friday night, forcing him to exit in the sixth inning of a 7-6 loss to the Padres.
Mullee said he had trouble gripping the baseball as he issued a walk to San Diego infielder Ryan Schimpf. The Yankees placed Mullee on the DL prior to Saturday night's game and recalled right-hander Chad Green from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; Green will start against the Padres on Sunday.
"[Mullee] had the thoracic outlet syndrome test; that was clean," Girardi said. "That was our concern, sometimes when you have that funny feeling in your hand. He saw [the Padres'] orthopedic doctor; he didn't do any more tests with him, but the exam was fine."
Mullee was visited at the mound by Girardi and a trainer after he appeared to shake his right arm. He was making the third appearance of his big league career, having debuted on May 16 at Arizona, and was relieved by Richard Bleier.
"My fingers were like sausages. I couldn't feel the ball," Mullee said.
Mullee, 28, said his shoulder and elbow felt normal, which he considered encouraging. This was his second stint with the big league club this season, having been recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday.
