BALTIMORE -- Rain continues to follow the Yankees wherever they go, with a forecast of inclement weather postponing Sunday's contest against the Orioles at Camden Yards. The game will be made up as part of a split-admission doubleheader on Aug. 25.
It is the seventh postponement of the season for the Yankees, who will now travel to Detroit for a day-night doubleheader to be played on Monday at Comerica Park, making up washouts from April 14 and 15. Luis Severino will start the first game and Domingo German will go in the nightcap, manager Aaron Boone said.
"This seems wild," Boone said. "I've never looked at weather reports and radar so much in my life. I'm not getting any better at reading them, either."
Thursday's game against the Orioles was also rained out, with the Yankees sweeping the abbreviated two-game series during their visit to Baltimore. As a result, New York will play a July 9 doubleheader against the Orioles in Baltimore.
They also must return to Washington on June 18 for two games against the Nationals, one of which will complete a suspended game from May 15.
"I think we handle it pretty well," Boone said. "You've just got to try and appreciate a little bit of the day off now. Recharge the battery a little bit, stay off your legs knowing we've got a doubleheader tomorrow and then rolling into Toronto late at night for two games, and knowing you've got a day off behind it. Obviously these games are building up, but it's also something that we understand is out of our control."
Boone said that he remains hopeful that part of their schedule could become more travel friendly in the days to come. ESPN picked up New York's July 8 game against the Blue Jays for their Sunday Night Baseball telecast, meaning that the Yankees would have to play an 8:05 p.m. ET contest in Toronto, then travel to Baltimore for a 4:05 p.m. ET doubleheader the next day.
"Hopefully, it's still happening behind the scenes there a little bit," Boone said. "Hopefully, there's some pressure being applied because that's just not good for the product on the field and for the safety of our guys to be having to go night game, flight into a doubleheader. That's ridiculous, and anyone that would argue with that is not being truthful."
Told that the July 8 game appears to be locked in by his former employer, Boone replied, "Well, unlock it."
