After the Yankees snapped a five-game losing streak with a thrilling win over the Angels on Monday, manager Aaron Boone joined the Talkin’ Yanks podcast Tuesday to discuss numerous topics, including a few key injury updates.
News keeps trending in a positive direction regarding top-line starters Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón, who have yet to make their 2026 debuts.
Cole (Tommy John surgery) threw three innings and 42 pitches in live batting practice on Sunday at High-A Hudson Valley, and Boone said he’s scheduled to throw again on Friday -- normal four days’ rest -- either in another live session or in game action. The decision as to the type of session he pitches in will come later this week.
Cole, 35, is continuing to progress after he made his way back to the mound in Spring Training. He started twice, throwing 2 2/3 innings and 36 pitches.
Meanwhile, Rodón (left elbow surgery) threw three innings and 50 pitches on Monday in live batting practice. He’s slated to throw again Saturday, likely in another live session but potentially in game action. The lefty should throw “close” to the 60-pitch mark. Rodón is seemingly recovering well from the right hamstring tightness that briefly delayed his rehab timeline.
Though neither pitcher has an exact return date targeted, Rodón has been projected for late April or early May, with Cole about a month behind him.
“I think that's probably still accurate,” Boone said.
In other Yankees injury news, shortstop Anthony Volpe (left shoulder surgery) is set to begin a Minor League rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Somerset.
