Baseball players will try just about anything to break out of a slump (see: Cal Raleigh showering in full uniform earlier this month). For Jazz Chisholm Jr., the fix has come from stealing a teammate’s look.
Chisholm -- 5-foot-11 and 184 pounds -- started wearing the pants of 6-foot-5, 245-pound Giancarlo Stanton last Friday, when his average sat at .203. Chisholm subsequently went 3-for-4 on Saturday and then rattled off four consecutive multi-hit performances.
After trying a similar strategy with Trent Grisham’s pants earlier in the year, Chisholm seems to have found something that works, and Stanton probably won’t be getting his pants back any time soon. Fortunately, Stanton isn’t concerned about that.
"I think it's great,” said Stanton, who is still rehabbing a right calf strain. “It's definitely cool, especially since he's been raking in them, so I think it's gonna stay.
"They’ve got homers in them."
Indeed, Chisholm went yard on Monday against the Blue Jays, a go-ahead two-run shot in the seventh inning. It was the first homer since May 5 for the Yankees' second baseman.
We’re questioning the actual possibility of such a thing, but Stanton was also asked whether he’d give Chisholm’s pants a try upon his return to the field. Seems like an idea destined for an Incredible Hulk-style clothes ripping.
"We might work on it, see what we can do,” Stanton said.
Oversized is “in” right now. And Chisholm is certainly happy to follow the trend.
“I found Big G’s pants in the back,” Chisholm said. “They’re a little bit bigger, but it doesn’t matter the size. It’s more of the look for me.”
