Yanks to honor late announcer Sterling with memorial patch

May 5th, 2026

NEW YORK – The Yankees announced Tuesday that they will pay a season-long tribute to legendary broadcaster John Sterling by wearing a customized memorial patch on their uniform sleeves at the start of their next homestand on May 18.

Beginning with that evening’s game against the Blue Jays, the Yankees will wear circular patches that bear Sterling’s name and a microphone over a pinstriped backdrop.

Sterling, who passed away Monday at 87, called 5,426 regular-season Yankees games and 225 more in the postseason from 1989 through his retirement in 2024.

Sterling’s tenure included five World Series championships and a remarkable streak of 5,060 consecutive games from September 1989 to July 2019.

The Yankees wore customized caps Monday with “JS” embroidered on the back. They will continue to wear those through May 17 against the Mets at Citi Field.

Yankees captain Aaron Judge and manager Aaron Boone also said Monday that they hope the team will continue to play Sterling’s iconic “Theeee Yankees win!” recording after each victory at Yankee Stadium.

“I think it’d be a nice little tip of the cap to John and what he meant to so much of this franchise and this fan base,” Judge said.

Sterling’s microphone – which he used until his retirement in 2024 – went on display Tuesday at the Yankees Museum near Section 210.
