Yankees, Mets to battle in 2 exhibition games

July 7th, 2020

NEW YORK -- Let's dust off the Mayor's Trophy! The Mets and Yankees have agreed to meet for a pair of exhibition games next week prior to the opening of the regular season, it was announced on Tuesday.

The crosstown rivals are scheduled to meet at Citi Field on July 18 (7:10 p.m. ET first pitch) and at Yankee Stadium on July 19 (7:05 p.m. first pitch). The clubs are also scheduled to meet for six Subway Series contests during the regular season.

“It'll be good,” said Yankees first baseman Luke Voit. “It’s a little different getting ready for these [intrasquad] games -- you're playing against your own guys; it kind of feels like a practice. So it'll be nice to potentially maybe have umpires and it'll be the whole routine of getting ready, going out there, having everybody in your dugout. It'll make it definitely more game-like.”

The Yankees have also announced a third exhibition game against the Phillies on July 20 at Yankee Stadium (6:05 p.m.).

“It's something that I think is important,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It's something that we put a lot of value on, but to be able to have it here in our home city, it's something that certainly we'll look forward to. Hopefully for us, it'll be something that gives us a really good tune-up heading into the regular season.”

The Yankees will open the regular season on July 23 against the Nationals in Washington, while the Mets open on July 24 at home against the Braves.

The Mayor's Trophy Game was a New York tradition dating back to the 1940s, when the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants met for in-season exhibition games. Discontinued when the Dodgers and Giants moved to California after the '57 season, the Mayor's Trophy was revived for the Mets and Yankees in '63, but a contest bearing that title has not been played since '83.
