NEW YORK -- Yankees pitching prospect Alexander Figueredo was shot and killed in his home country of Venezuela on Nov. 27, the team has confirmed. He was 20 years old.
According to a Venezuelan report from Notitarde, Figueredo was fatally shot in the early morning hours of Nov. 27 while attending at a house party in the municipality of Guacara.
Figueredo, who was 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, did not pitch during the 2016 season after being placed on the suspended/restricted list for an undisclosed reason.
He was not considered a top prospect, but the left-hander enjoyed success in 2015, his first season pitching in the organization. Figueredo was 5-0 with a 1.89 ERA in 12 games (11 starts) for the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Yankees, striking out 52 and walking 22 in 57 innings.
According to the Notitarde report, Figueredo had most recently pitched for the Bravos de Margarita of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. He lived with his mother and two sisters in Guacara.
