Yanks put up 13-run 3rd, tied for their biggest inning in 106 years

WEST SACRAMENTO -- Will the Yankees ever stop hitting?

During a patently ridiculous top of the third inning of Sunday's finale against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park, the answer to that question sure seemed to be “no.”

New York sent 18 batters to the plate, scoring 13 runs on 11 hits and four walks in the club’s highest-scoring inning since a 14-run fifth on July 6, 1920, against Washington. That was the heyday of Babe Ruth, who had an intentional walk and a two-run single in the massive frame.

The Yankees’ first 10 runs on Sunday all came with nobody out in the inning, their most in an inning before recording an out since at least 1974.

All nine starters came up twice in the inning, with Ben Rice recording four RBIs in the frame on a two-run double and a two-run triple. The A’s made a pair of pitching changes in the inning, pulling starter Jacob Lopez in favor of right-hander Michael Kelly and replacing Kelly with righty Jack Perkins.

Before Sunday, the last time a Major League team scored 13 runs in an inning was May 23, 2025, when the Red Sox had a 13-run eighth against the Orioles.
