November 18th, 2023

The Yankees shuffled their roster ahead of Friday’s 8 p.m. ET non-tender deadline, acquiring outfield prospects Jace Avina and Brian Sanchez from the Brewers in exchange for infielder/outfielder Jake Bauers.

New York also non-tendered right-handers Albert Abreu and Lou Trivino, and left-hander Anthony Misiewicz; all three are now free agents.

Yankees get: OF Jace Avina, OF Brian Sanchez
Brewers get: INF/OF Jake Bauers

Contracts were tendered to left-hander Nestor Cortes; catchers Kyle Higashioka and Jose Trevino; right-handers Clay Holmes, Jonathan Loáisiga, Michael King and Clarke Schmidt; and infielder Gleyber Torres.

Avina, 20, has been ranked as No. 30 on the Yankees’ Top 30 prospects list after being ranked by MLB Pipeline as Milwaukee’s No. 29 prospect. A 14th-round Draft pick in 2021, he hit 14 home runs, stole 10 bases and posted an .815 OPS at Single-A this season.

The 19-year-old Sanchez slashed .297/.414/.446 across 101 at-bats in Rookie-level ball in 2023, marking his professional debut.

Bauers is in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 28-year-old got off to a hot start after being promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2023, though his bat cooled in the second half. Overall, he hit .202/.279/.413 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 84 games, seeing time at first base and the outfield corners.

Abreu, 28, was 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA in 19 big league appearances this past season and is in his first year of arbitration. He has a 4.58 ERA over 108 games with the Yankees, Rangers and Royals dating back to 2020.

Misiewicz, 29, made just three appearances for the Yankees after being selected off waivers from the Tigers this past July 6. He sustained a season-ending concussion when he was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of the Pirates’ Ji Hwan Bae on Sept. 15.

Trivino, 32, missed the ’23 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. Acquired from the Athletics as part of the July 2022 trade for right-hander Frankie Montas, who is also now a free agent, Trivino earned $4.1 million this past year. A fourth-year arb-eligible, Trivino has a 3.86 career ERA in 285 big league games with the Athletics and Yankees dating back to 2018.
