TEMPE, Ariz. -- Left fielder Yasmany Tomas, who is coming back from a strained right oblique muscle, was scheduled to receive at least four at-bats in a Minor League game Saturday, his first game action since March 5.
"The thought is that he plays [in a Cactus League game] within the next couple of days if he has a good day today," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said before Saturday's Major League game, a 7-4 loss to the Angels.
Bradley role TBD
Lovullo announced Friday that Archie Bradley would make the Opening Day roster as a reliever, but he said that no decision has yet been made as to what role Bradley will fill in the 'pen.
"This hasn't been talked about," Lovullo said. "He made the team because we felt like he was one of the best pieces that could fit into the bullpen, period. Not that he's the long man, not that he's going to be a seventh- or eighth-inning guy, but just that he was one of the best guys that we could take with us."
No opener for Barrett
Lovullo confirmed right-hander Jake Barrett will start the season on the disabled list. Barrett experienced some shoulder discomfort when camp opened. Though he has made progress and probably could be rushed back in time for the April 2 opener, the team wants to make sure it takes its time with him.
Godley flexible
Right-hander Zack Godley was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Saturday and the team will try to have him available to start or relieve if there's a need at the big league level.
"There are a couple of thoughts that we're going to put together that will include him as a starter and a reliever," Lovullo said. "We'll initiate two different plans. He's going to be that versatile for us."
Blanco on the mend
Outfielder Gregor Blanco said that his right side, which caused him to be scratched from the lineup Thursday, was feeling better Saturday.
"Blanco is doing OK," Lovullo said. "He's doing better, [but] not completely ready for a return-to-play program."
