Moncada on comeback trail, feels 'much better'

August 10th, 2019

CHICAGO -- Yoan Moncada looked a bit worn out after going through an intense on-field workout prior to Saturday’s game against the A’s at Guaranteed Rate Field.

But it was a good kind of tired for the White Sox third baseman as he moves closer to a return from a strained right hamstring that put him on the injured list, retroactive to July 31.

“I've been feeling better, way better,” said Moncada through interpreter Billy Russo. “I still have some discomfort, just a little bit, not a big deal. But thank God, I've been feeling very, very good. I wouldn't say 100 percent, but much better.

“Right now, I am doing all that they ask me to do. There is no specific routine for me to keep my rhythm or my timing. Hopefully, as soon as I start playing, I will get my timing back as soon as possible.”

Moncada, 24, had been having a breakout season prior to the injury with a slash line of .301/.358/.535 to go with 20 home runs, 21 doubles and 59 RBIs. He has been swinging from both sides of the plate, taking grounders and doing other work related directly to the injury rehab.

The soreness for Moncada pops up primarily when he has to charge for a ball in front of him and a little bit when hitting from the right side, per Moncada.

“I didn't feel any pain or discomfort hitting from the left side. That's a good sign,” Moncada said. “Keep working. Keep working until I feel 100 percent. Hopefully I will be able to come back pretty soon.”

“His is more just mild stamina,” White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. “After the second or third step, you feel a little tightness or tiredness, and I think that's something he'll be able to work through. He's moving in a good direction."

Jimenez gets a bobblehead

The Eloy Jimenez bobblehead given away at Saturday’s game brought happiness to the White Sox left fielder for more reasons than the celebration of his first career home run on April 12 of this season. It also marked the first bobblehead -- of what Jimenez remembers as five bobbleheads made in his honor -- to feature him wearing red batting gloves.

Jimenez started wearing those batting gloves a little more than two years ago in honor of his grandfather.

“Really cool. Really cool,” Jimenez said. “It’s my first with the red batting gloves, and I think that’s cool.”

All of Jimenez's memorable baseballs, bobbleheads and trophies are kept together. He plans to get one of Saturday’s bobbleheads as well.

Third to first

Right-handed reliever Kelvin Herrera was back in the White Sox clubhouse Saturday and figures to be activated from the injured list soon. Herrera made three injury rehab appearances with Triple-A Charlotte to test his right oblique strain that placed him on the injured list, retroactive to July 18.

The White Sox will celebrate Harold Baines Day on Sunday. Baines, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 21, 2019, will be honored during a pregame ceremony. Guests scheduled to appear include former teammates Ron Kittle and Ozzie Guillen, former White Sox third-base coach and former Detroit manager Jim Leyland, iconic White Sox broadcaster Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, as well as fellow Hall of Famers Jim Thome, Carlton Fisk, Tim Raines and Tony La Russa.
