After a two-week stretch when he hit just about everything in sight at Triple-A, Rockies outfield prospect Zac Veen is heading back to the Majors.
Colorado called up Veen on Tuesday, with infielder Edouard Julien designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Veen, the No. 9 overall pick of the 2020 Draft, is the Rockies’ No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. He was the sport’s No. 27 overall prospect in 2023, but injuries and poor performance dented his stock. He got his first shot in the big leagues last season and went 4-for-34 in 12 games before being sent back to Triple-A Albuquerque.
The 24-year-old spent last offseason improving both his lifestyle and his game, and the results have been eye-opening.
Through 100 games at Triple-A this season, Veen owns a .327/.402/.635 slash line to go with 24 home runs, 65 extra-base hits and 18 stolen bases. His 1.037 OPS is the fourth best among all full-season Minor Leaguers with at least 300 plate appearances this year.
Veen has really bulked up those numbers since July 28, batting .462 (24-for-52) with eight homers and 24 RBIs over his past 12 contests. There was one standout performance mixed in among that run of productive games: Veen’s 5-for-5 night on Saturday in which he bopped three home runs and recorded 17 total bases.
Only five players have racked up that many total bases in a Minor League game since at least 2005.
