D-backs give Godley chance to rebound in bullpen

August 31st, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO -- D-backs right-hander showed promise in nine appearances last year, accumulating a 5-1 record with a 3.19 ERA. He hasn't been able to duplicate that success this year.
The D-backs aren't losing faith in Godley, who won three of his first four decisions since being recalled for a start on June 11, even as his ERA has continued to climb.
Godley, who returned to the bullpen when was recalled from Triple-A Reno to make Wednesday's start against the Giants, really only made two rough starts. They just happened to be in his last two appearances.
Godley becomes one of three relievers whom D-backs manager Chip Hale can rely upon for multiple innings over the final month of the season. Hale also mentioned and as the others.
Godley continues to show he has what it takes to pitch in the Majors. His 5 1/3-inning relief stint on Aug. 12, in which he allowed a run on two hits, led to a quality start five days later.

His last two starts, though, have been completely out of character, as he gave up career high in runs in successive outings.
During a solid rookie season, Godley gave up more than three runs in an appearance once and then came back to win his next start.
He'll continue to get his chances over the final month.
Worth noting
Right-hander was optioned to Reno to make room for Miller. Reno is playing in Sacramento, about a 90-minute from San Francisco, and it's likely Campos' stay with the Aces will be short-lived.
